How to Fix Peeling Paint Before Repainting
Scrape, sand, prime, and repaint areas where latex or oil paint is flaking — stop peel from spreading.
Why paint peels
- Painting over dirty, glossy, or wet surfaces
- Moisture behind the wall (bathroom, exterior, leak)
- Oil paint topped with latex without bonding primer
- Cheap paint or paint applied too thick in one coat
Fix it properly
If peel returns in weeks, investigate moisture before repainting again.
- Scrape all loose and lifting paint until edges are firmly bonded
- Sand feathered edge where old meets bare — 120 grit
- Dust; apply bonding or oil-blocking primer on bare and transition zones
- Fill low spots if needed, sand, prime again
- Two finish coats — blend beyond the patch if the sheen mismatch shows
Frequently asked questions
Can I paint over peeling paint?
No — new paint will peel with the old layer. Remove all failing paint first, then prime and recoat.
