Basic removal process

  • Score vinyl wallpaper with a scoring tool so remover penetrates
  • Apply hot water or wallpaper stripper with a pump sprayer; wait 10–15 minutes
  • Scrape with a wide putty knife — work parallel to the wall to avoid gouges
  • Remove residual paste with hot water and sponge or commercial paste remover
  • Sand rough areas; wash walls; let dry 24–48 hours
  • Prime entire wall — leftover paste stains and porosity vary

Paint vs new wallpaper after removal

Painting: prime with drywall primer, then two finish coats. Use our room paint calculator for gallons.

New wallpaper: walls must be smooth and primed — paste residue causes bubbles. Use our wallpaper calculator for rolls.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paint over wallpaper instead of removing?

Only if paper is fully glued, no seams lifting, and you prime with an oil or shellac sealer first. Removal is safer long-term — water can loosen paper under latex paint later.
