Paint Coverage by Brand in Canada

Canadian paint aisles are not one brand. Home Depot is usually Behr, Lowe’s is usually Valspar, Canadian Tire is Dulux or CIL, Home Hardware is Beauti-Tone, dealers carry Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams stores carry Duration and SuperPaint, and Cloverdale is the Western Canada staple. Coverage still comes from the can.

How to use the brand chart

The table on this page is a planning range for interior latex on smooth primed drywall. Click a brand for a 12×12 worked example, then enter your room size in the calculator with the Coverage number from that specific can.

We are an independent calculator — not a manufacturer colour tool, not a store affiliate page. See the disclaimer under the table.

12×12 room (any of these brands)

384 sq ft of walls × two coats = 768 sq ft to cover. At 400 sq ft/gallon that is 1.9 gallons (buy 2). At 350 sq ft/gallon that is 2.2 gallons (buy 3). Texture, primer, and colour change are why two brands with the same label rate still need different carts.

Frequently asked questions

Which paint brand covers the most per gallon in Canada?

Premium interiors from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Cloverdale, Dulux, Behr, and others cluster around 350–400 sq ft/gallon on ideal walls. Differences show up on primer, exterior, and cheap contractor lines — read each can rather than picking a “winner.”

Are you affiliated with these brands?

No. Brand names are used only to match typical Canadian label coverage so you can enter the right sq ft per gallon. See the disclaimer on this page.

Why do Canadian cans show m² instead of sq ft?

Bilingual labels often list square metres per 3.78 L. About 37 m² per gallon ≈ 400 sq ft. Convert before entering sq ft per gallon, or use the imperial line if both are printed.
