Choose a wall that supports the room
A useful accent wall has a clear visual reason: it frames a bed, fireplace, dining area, or other focal point. A wall broken by several doors, vents, or cabinets can fragment a large design and create excessive cutting. Stand at the room entrance and from the main seated position to check whether the selected wall feels intentional from both views.
Consider daylight and fixtures. Reflective or dark papers can look dramatically different opposite a window or under grazing light. Order a sample and place it vertically on the wall for several days before buying full rolls. Check it beside flooring, trim, and the paint on the adjoining walls.
Measure full-width drops, not just square area
Measure the wall width at the top, middle, and bottom and use the largest figure for strip planning. Measure height in several places as well. Divide the maximum width by the labelled paper width and round up to determine the number of strips. Then calculate how many pattern-aligned drops fit in each packaged roll.

Centre the design deliberately
For a strong geometric, mural-like, or oversized botanical print, decide which motif should sit on the focal centreline. Mark that line and plan equal edge cuts so neither corner ends with an accidental sliver. The visual centre may be the bed or fireplace rather than the mathematical centre of the wall.
Use a level to create a plumb starting line. Corners are frequently out of plumb, so starting from one can make the design drift across the wall. Dry-plan at least the first and last strip widths. Review the pattern repeat guide before cutting a straight, drop, or reverse-hung design.
Prepare the wall and boundaries
Remove loose coatings, repair dents, sand smooth, and use the wall preparation product specified for the wallpaper and adhesive. A feature wall attracts attention, so ridges and unsealed patches are especially visible in side light. Let repairs and primer dry fully before hanging.
Decide how the paper will terminate at inside corners, trim, baseboards, and the ceiling. Do not assume a decorative caulk bead will hide poor cuts. Remove switch plates safely, keep paste out of electrical boxes, and pre-plan cuts around fixed objects. If the wall has persistent dampness or an unresolved leak, correct that condition before covering it.
Coordinate paint without competing
Pull a quieter background or secondary colour from the paper for the remaining walls rather than automatically matching its boldest motif. Test the paint and paper together under the room’s real lighting. A lower-reflection wall finish often lets the pattern remain the focal point, but select a paint suitable for the room’s cleaning needs.
