Wallpaper Pattern Repeat Explained

What pattern repeat means on a wallpaper label, how it affects roll count, and tips for accent walls.

Random match vs straight match vs drop match

The repeat number (e.g. 21 cm or 9 inches) is the vertical distance before the design repeats. Larger repeats mean longer cuts per strip.

  • Random match / no repeat: easiest install, least waste
  • Straight match: pattern aligns horizontally at the same height each drop
  • Drop match: pattern shifts vertically — most waste, most planning

Why repeat matters for shopping

Two rooms with identical square footage can need different roll counts if the repeat differs. Always enter repeat into our calculator — guessing "one roll per wall" fails on patterned paper.

Frequently asked questions

What if my label says no repeat?
